Mother Earth is burning up

With temperatures in the Hawaiian Islands as well as throughout the world scorching hot, one doesn’t have to be a scientist or genius to know global warming and climate change have occurred. With the United States currently emitting more than 2 billion tons of carbon dioxide a year, more pollution is added to the greenhouse emissions creating a warmer planet.

What is sad is that more than 250,000 people annually die because of global warming. That is an alarming number and is a cause for people to be concerned. Primarily, there are too many people on planet Earth. The current population for the entire planet hovers around 7.3 billion people, which is way too many.

There will be a day when the birds don’t sing and the flowers don’t bloom if human beings keep up their current way of life in this modern industrialized world. Normal drinking water may not be available for people to consume. Talking about the Hawaiian Islands, more hurricanes could be a reality in the near future.

All in all, it is time to become aware of the nature and causes of global warming and climate change.

Total victory not realistic goal for vague wars

War on drugs, war on poverty, war on terrorism — what do they have in common? A vaguely described objective.

The first thing we teach in engineering is that a problem well-defined is half solved. None of the above three are well defined.

A war needs a clearly defined enemy that can be killed or captured. None of the “war-ons” can meet that criterion. These problems have to be mitigated with education and compassion. Unlike real war, total victory is not a realistic goal.
