Derbes to discuss inflammation issues

“The Facts About Inflammation” will be presented from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Tutu’s House in Waimea.

Lawrence Derbes Jr., MD, FACC, longtime vegan and board-certified cardiologist practicing and residing in Waimea, will discuss inflammation and how it causes chronic health problems including arthritis, coronary artery disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s. He will also discuss how to prevent it.

Rotary clubs announce speakers

University women meeting Tuesday

The Kona Branch of the American Association of University Women will kick off its 2014-15 schedule of events at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the West Hawaii Civic Center, Building G.

The guest speaker will be a representative from the local police department talking about human trafficking on the Big Island. This topic is an extension of the state convention’s theme, Half the Rainbow. All members and those interested in the possibility of membership are encouraged to attend. New members will receive a one-time special rate for annual dues at this event.

AAUW’s mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research.

Therapists to discuss caregiving challenges

The Kona Hospital Foundation presents “Meeting the Challenges of Family Caregiving” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the West Hawaii Civic Center, Community Meeting Hale.

Tina Fox, occupational therapist, and Paul Virgin, physical therapist, will discuss the “how-to” questions of caring for a loved one at home. As members of the rehabilitation team at Life Care Center of Kona, Fox and Virgin are qualified to offer tips on how to safely provide in-home care.

The Kona Hospital Foundation lectures are free and open to the public.

Seniors to attend movie showing

Kailua-Kona Seniors meets at 10a.m. Wednesday at the West Hawaii Civic Center, Building A. Members will watch the movie, “Philomena,” starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan. This movie is based on a book by BBC correspondent Martin Sixsmith, “The Lost Child of Philomena Lee.”

There is no meeting at Hale Halawai this week.
