Conservation talk story is Wednesday

A free Conservation Connections Talk Story will be presented by the Kaupulehu Community, Kalaemano Learning Center and Hawaii Conservation Alliance at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Kalaemano Learning Center, 72-3469 Kalaemano Dr., in Kailua-Kona.

The panel will consit of Leina ala Keakealani, Keoki Apokolani Carter, Yvonne Yarber Carter, Ku ulei Keakealani, Lehua Alapai, Wilds Pihanui Brawner and Pelika Andrade Stewards of the North Kona ahupuaa of Kaupulehu.

Attendees will learn about multiple stewardship and generational perspectives of caring for the mauka dryland forest and the makai shoreline.

Senior movie day is Wednesday

Elderly Recreation Services will be holding a free movie screening at 10 a.m. Wednesday. This month’s movie will be Philomena and will be shown at the West Hawaii Civic Center in Building A. For information, call Kelly at 323-4340.

Cop on Top to benefit Special Olympics West Hawaii

Cop On Top will raise funds for Special Olympics Hawaii programs from Sept. 25 through 27 at Walmart.

Officers volunteering their own time will sit on scaffolding for three days and two nights until they raise a minimum of $15,000. All of the funds raised will remain in West Hawaii to purchase equipment, transportation and coach training, to provide opportunities for West Hawaii athletes. No fees are charged to participating athletes.

Event will raise funds for Yurt Project

The second HarvesTea will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Four Seasons Resort Grand Ballroom.

The event will raise funds for Habitat for Humanity’s Yurt Project. Guest speaker is gubernatorial candidate Duke Aiona, who will share his vision for affordable housing throughout Hawaii. In addition, Jen McGeehan will share her story of renting a yurt in Paauilo.

HarvesTea invitations are available at Habitat For Humanity West Hawaii and from registration coordinator Darlene Pullen at 220-7584 or pullendarlene@gmail.com. Tickets are $49 per person. On Oct. 1, the ticket price increases to $74, with a $100 price at the door. All net proceeds will be donated to The Yurt Project.

Lava flow update is Thursday

The next lava flow community update meeting will be held with representatives from Hawaii County Civil Defense and the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Pahoa High School cafeteria.

In addition, the County of Hawaii has established an Incident Command Center and Informational Resource Center at the Pahoa Community Center. Residents are invited to the information center from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday next week for answers to their questions.
