HONOLULU — Efforts are underway to restore the remnants of a Hawaiian community that dates to around the year 1450.
The Hawaii Community Development Authority is working with the Kalaeloa Heritage and Legacy Foundation on the proposed 77-acre Kalaeloa Heritage Park on the plains of Ewa.
The development authority received the land from the U.S. Navy after Barbers Point Naval Air Station was closed in 1999. The next step would be for the foundation to secure a long-term lease.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the foundation would help operate an interpretive area where visitors would be guided along a trail that includes an area with remnants of an early Hawaiian village.
Most of the proposed development will occur in an area previously cleared for military activities.
