Coming off a breakthrough performance, the University of Hawaii at Hilo men’s soccer team fell into some old habits.

Kelly Keyran scored midway through the second half Monday, leading Azusa Pacific to a 1-0 victory against the Vulcans.

The Vulcans (3-6-1, 1-4 Pacific West Conference) fell to 1-1 on their homestand. They rode a more aggressive style to 2-1 victory Saturday against Point Loma, but two days later they failed to score for the fourth time in five matches.

UHH put all six of its shots on frame, but a pair of Azusa goal keepers combined on the shutout.

Luke Ackerman assisted on Keyran’s goal for the Cougars (5-2, 2-1).

Erick Lemus made four saves for the Vulcans.

The women’s match was played to a a scoreless draw.

Jenna Hufford made seven saves for the Vulcans (5-2-3, 2-1-2). The Cougars (2-6-1, 0-2-1) earned their first point in league play and held a 9-3 advantage in shots.

Volleyball

Dominican won its first PacWest match of the season, handing the Vulcans their second consecutive five-set loss, and leaving coach Tino Reyes to scratch his head.

“We’re just not ready to make plays,” Reyes said after the 22-25, 25-7, 25-23, 22-25, 15-10 setback in San Rafael, Calif. “We shoot ourselves in the foot. We just do the most amazing things out there, and not in a good way.”

Picking up the slack for an injured Marley Strand-Nicolaisen, middle blocker Kyndra Trevino-Scott shined again for the Vulcans (4-7, 3-5 PacWest) with 16 kills on .433 hitting.

“Only Kyndra played well,” Reyes said.

Aimee Steinwand paced the Penguins (3-13, 1-7) with 19 kills.

Reyes said Strand-Nicolaisen would likely be back in the lineup when UHH hosts BYU-Hawaii on Saturday.

She was clearly missed again at outside hitter on a night when no player except for Trevino-Scott was efficient. Callie Aberle (.048 percentage) posted 11 kills, Morgan Lees (.098) added nine and Shelby Harquess (.000) had eight.

The Vulcans finished their road trip 1-5, and the low point might have come during a Game 2 rout in which they made 11 attack errors with only four kills.

“What was that?” Reyes said. “That’s a butt-whooping.”

Women’s golf

Freshman Andi Igawa shot a 9-over 82 and the Lady Vulcans were in third place after the first round of their season-opener, the St. Martin’s Invitational in Olympia, Wash.

Igawa, a Waiakea graduate, was tied for fifth as UHH (50-over 342) was 21 shots behind first-place St. Martin’s in the five-team field.

The Vulcans’ Shannon Abarra (84) was tied for 10th, and was followed by teammates Erin Costes ( 87), Alison Tengan (89) and Mariah Paiste (90).

Simon Fraser’s Jennifer Liedes led the field at 74.
