Volunteers sought to remove invasive plants from National Park

“Stewardship at the Summit” programs in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park invite voluteers to protect the ecosystem from invasive, nonnative plants.

Volunteer sessions will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Oct. 18, 24 and 31, Nov. 7, 15, 21, and 29, and Dec. 3, 12, 19 and 27.

Attendees should meet project leaders Paul and Jane Field at 9 a.m. at Kilauea Visitor Center. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and long pants. Bring a hat, rain gear, day pack, snacks and water. Gloves and tools are provided. No advance registration is required, and there is no cost to participate, but park entrance fees apply.

Lanihau Center offers dancing in the streets

Pacific Fusion will perform dance tunes from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and Oct. 16 at Lanihau Center.

Attendees should dress in the attire of their favorite decade as they hear music from the ’50s through the ’90s and current hits. Dance contests will be held. The event is free.

Gubernatorial candidate forum is Monday

The Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce will host a gubernatorial candidate forum from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in the Kealakehe High School cafeteria.

Candidates Duke Aiona, Mufi Hannemann and David Ige will field questions from moderator Sherry Bracken. The forum is free. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.

Big Library Read makes electronic book available

Teen readers may borrow electronic and audio versions of the Big Library Read book, “Anatomy of a Misfit” by Andrea Portes through Oct. 28 by visiting librarieshawaii.org.

Big Library Read is an international program that provides libraries and patrons unlimited simultaneous access to a popular title for a two-week period, creating a virtual, global book club. Interested patrons will be able borrow “Anatomy of a Misfit” using a valid Hawaii library card.

The Hawaii library system offers more than 40,000 electronic and audiobook titles.

Committee on People with Disabilities meets

The Mayor’s Committee on People with Disabilities will meet at 10 a.m. Oct. 15 in the ADRC Training Room, 1055 Kinoole St. in Hilo. The meeting is open to the public. The agenda will be posted on the County’s website.

West Hawaii County Band plays on

West Hawaii County Band will play a free Octoberfest concert from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at Hale Halawai.
