Nonprofits invited to enter Charity Trees event at Mauna Lani

Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows invites organizations to participate in the 21st annual Charity Trees at Mauna Lani. This event helps raise awareness and funds for area nonprofits.

Nov. 24 is the entry deadline. The Charity Trees will be displayed in Mauna Lani Bay’s lobby from Dec. 3 through the holiday season. The public is invited to view the entries and vote for their favorite tree for a $1 donation per vote.

The winners will be announced Dec. 22. Mauna Lani Bay will award $2,000 for first place, $1,000 for second place and $500 for third place. Donations will be split among all participating organizations excluding the winners.

Fishers council meets Tuesday

West Hawaii Fishery Council will meet Thursday in the West Hawaii Civic Center Liquor Control Commission conference room on the second floor of Building B.

There will be an update on the public hearing held in Kauai for the Haena Community-Based Subsistence Fishing Area, as well as a refresher on the Kaupulehu project and where it stands in the regulatory process.

The meeting is open to the public. Food and drinks, except bottled water, are not permitted.

Two community forums held next week

Community Enterprises will host two community forums next week in the Makaeo pavilion at Old Kona Airport State Park.

The presentation “Earthquakes in Hawaii: What we all should know—and do,” will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Hawaiian Volcano Observatory seismologist Wes Thelen will present an overview of damaging earthquakes in Hawaii, including theories on where and why they occur and what residents can do to stay safe.

A meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 16 will focus on Hawaii County Real Property Taxation. Stan Sitko, Hawaii County Real Property Tax administrator will present “Real Property Tax Assessment – 101.” Hawaii County Council member Margaret Wille will highlight the work of the Hawaii County Real Property Taxation Task Force. Council member Karen Eoff will also provide County Council updates.

Community Enterprises Inc. is a private, nonprofit organization that brings educational resources to the residents of West Hawaii so they can better participate in public policy issues. Free craft programs held in Waimea

The Hawaii County Parks and Recreation Department in Waimea, in partnership with Waimea Athletics and craft enthusiast Lynn Yee, is holding arts and crafts programs Wednesdays at Waimea Community Center. The free classes begin at 3:30 p.m.

Cindy Evans to address League of Women Voters

Members and other interested persons are invited to join the League of Women Voters of Hawaii County to hear State Representative Cindy Evans speak during the group’s general meeting at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 at The Regency at Hualalai, 75-181 Hualalai St. in Kailua-Kona.

A business meeting for members starts at 11 a.m. Evan’s talk will begin at 11:30.

A no-host buffet luncheon at 12:15 p.m. will follow Evan’s talk. RSVP for lunch by Sunday, Oct. 19, to Marjorie at 324-4624 or merway@hawaii.rr.com. The cost is $15 for the luncheon.
