Volunteers sought for tax preparation
Hawaii VITA and Financial Empowerment Coalition is recruiting volunteers to prepare tax returns for low-to-moderate income workers.

Since it began in 2006, this program has helped close to 22,000 workers claim $31 million in tax refunds.

Artist collaboration need junk
The fourth annual Hawaii Artists Collaboration is seeking donations of cast-off items such as old tools, hardware and machinery to be made into art pieces. None will be resold. All items will be considered.

Filipino heritage talk is Thursday
The University of Hawaii at Hilo’s North Hawaii Education and Research Center will mark Filipino-American Heritage Month with a presentation by Domingo Los Banos on Filipino-American troops in World War II Thursday.
The talk will follow a 5:30 p.m. screening of Stephanie Castillo’s documentary “An Untold Triumph: the Story of the 1st and 2nd Filipino Infantry Regiments, U.S. Army.” Both events are free.

Rotary Means Business-Big Island meets Thursday
Rotary Means Business-Big Island will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Humpy’s upstairs showroom. The meeting allows Rotarians and their guests opportunity for fellowship and networking. The meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month.

Wounded veterans visit for scuba training
VFW Post 12122 will host six wounded warriors who are visiting the island for scuba instruction Friday. They are members of Soldiers Undertaking Disabled Scuba. The post will also celebrate Octoberfest with bratwurst, German potato salad and beer. The community is encouraged to stop by and welcome these heroes.

Quigong workshops offered
A weekend qigong workshop will be offered from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18 and Sunday, Oct. 19 at Kokolulu Farm and Cancer Retreats in Hawi. This workshop will be given again Nov. 7 through 9.
An intensive qigong training will include healing techniques October 17 through 22. The workshops are given by Peng Xiaoping from China.

Book sale benefits library in Kailua-Kona
The Friends of the Libraries, Kona will hold its next book sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18 on the lanai of the Kailua-Kona Public Library. Proceeds will support the needs of the Kona libraries.
The sale of music CDs, music cassette tapes, VCR tapes and LPs will be discontinued with November’s sale. These items will be 10 cents each at the October and November sales. Donations for these items will not be accepted after Tuesday. Sales of DVDs, books on CD and Hawaiian music on CDs will continue.
