Kona Pacific hosts literacy workshop

Kona Pacific Public Charter School invites families to participate in the first of a series of eight free workshops designed to support a child’s developing love of books and reading. The first workshop is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the school campus above Kona Community Hospital in Kealakekua. The first workshop, “Reading Aloud,” will focus on strategies for effective and age-appropriate read-aloud sessions in the home.

The workshop events begin with a light dinner and social time, followed by a one-hour workshop. Child care is provided, and children will be invited to select a book to take home. Workshops are free and open to any interested community members.

Kona Pacific offers a Waldorf educational program rooted in the land and culture of Hawaii. The school is located on 40 acres of prime agricultural land that provides many experiential learning opportunities.

Other workshops in the series are: Nov. 18, “Choosing Good Books for Children;” Jan. 20, “Growing Readers;” Feb. 17, “Dr. Seuss Reading Celebration;” March 24, “Storytelling as a Pathway to Literacy;” April 21, “Linking Language and Reading;” May 12, “Supporting Your Child’s Learning;” and June 2, “Developmental Approach to Literacy.”
