Camp Tarawa Marines meet Saturday

Camp Tarawa Detachment 1255 of the Marine Corps League meets Saturday at the VFW Post located at 74-5543 Kaiwi St., Suite 185A, behind Kona Locksmith. The no-host lunch starts at 11:30 a.m. followed by a 1 p.m. meeting. All Marines and Navy corpsmen and their spouses are invited to attend. Dress is resort casual.

Ahi tagging topic for Friday meeting

The Pacific Islands Fisheries Group and the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council are hosting an open event for Kona offshore fishermen from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the West Hawaii Civic Center Council Chambers.

During the event, PIFG will launch a satellite tagging project targeting ahi, or bigeye tuna, off the Kona Coast. The project aims to catch, tag and release five ahi of at least 70 pounds. Fishermen are encouraged to come to the event to learn about the project and the science and management of ahi in Hawaii. The feature presenter is bluefin tagging expert Molly Lutcavage from the Large Pelagics Research Center. The project is a cooperative research effort by PIFG, Kona fishermen and the LPRC and is sponsored by the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council.

McGrew Rice, long-time Kona charter captain and member of the fishery council, will be at the event to discuss another cooperative project involving Kona fishermen and the council. The project is the deployment of a fish aggregation device approximately 20 miles offshore Kealakekua Bay. At the Friday public meeting, McGrew and council staff will describe the objectives of the project including enhanced fishing opportunities, voluntary data collection and cooperative research.

School hosting Halloween Journey

Jules Verne’s “Around the World in 80 Days” is the theme for the 14th annual Kona Pacific Public Charter School’s Magical Halloween Journey held from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the school grounds above Kona Community Hospital. Participants will meet Phileas Fogg and visit 18th century London, Japan and San Francisco while receiving Halloween treats on the journey.

Tickets are $7 per person; children younger than 2 years are admitted free. This event is a school fundraiser and also features an international cafe, games for children of all ages and a bonfire with a “Steam Punk Snack Shack.” Tickets can be purchased at the school office. Costumes (not scary) are welcome. Closed-toed shoes and a flashlight are encouraged.

Guitarist performs Saturday at library

Guitarist Greg Shirley will give a live performance from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Kailua-Kona Public Library. Sponsored by Friends of the Libraries, this concert is free to the public.

Elks planning Oktoberfest event

All Elks Lodge members are encouraged to attend the Oktoberfest dinner and dance being held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Kona Elks Lodge. The menu will be German style food, including German potato salad and sauerkraut with kielbasa. Full House Band will perform. Cost is $20. Guests are encouraged.

Humane Society plans dog walk

The public is invited to join the Hawaii Island Humane Society at 8 a.m. Saturday at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel a for a dog “paw-rade.” This free event includes contests and prizes. Auntie’s Angels celebrates one year

Auntie’s Angels will hold its monthly Soup Kitchen n Pantry for the low-income seniors living at Hualalai Elderly Housing on Saturday.

The Angel Soup Kitchen is celebrating its first anniversary and thanks their canned goods sponsors Solid Rock Ministries -Kona and Kona Baptist Church, along with the community which shares its fresh produce.
