People’s Theatre surpasses goal

The Honokaa People’s Theatre’s fundraising efforts to purchase a new $60,000 digital projector have been successful, raising almost double the desired goal, according to organizers. With the help of more than 500 individual contributions from the community in 60 days, the goal was exceeded.

The theater was facing the end of movie showings because of studio conversion to digital media, which meant a costly upgrade the theater was unable to meet. Faced with going dark, the community rallied behind the historic theater and gave almost $90,000 in mostly small family donations of $100 or less, with several large donations coming from historical enthusiasts, and film and music supporters.

The additional funds are designated to go toward the formation and funding of a nonprofit organization to encourage arts and cultural programming and classes at the theater.

Anyone who has nonprofit ideas, suggestions or can volunteer time can email hpt@honokaapeople.com. For more information, visit honokaapeople.com or call 775-0000.
