Kahilu Theatre is starting Halloween weekend early this year with a pre-party and screened presentation of the dark comedy, cult classic, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” on Thursday.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. with music by DJ Brian Thomas, a photo booth, food, beverage and bags of props for purchase. At 7 p.m., there will be a costume contest on stage, with prizes for the scariest, funniest, audience favorite and more, followed by a magic show by The Great Barusky. The film starts at 8 p.m. with audience participation invited.

“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is a 1975 musical comedy horror film and an adaptation of “The Rocky Horror Show,” a musical stage play by Richard O’Brien. The production is a humorous tribute to the science fiction and horror B movies of the late 1940s through early 1970s. It introduces Tim Curry and features Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick. In 2005, the film was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.”

In the film, a newly engaged couple, Brad and Janet, are stranded in the rain when their car breaks down. They seek shelter at the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a transvestite. The weird and wonderful story unfolds as a large group of Transylvanians dance to the ‘Time Warp” and Dr. Frank-N-Furter builds his own man.

The mayhem begins with the audience joining the wedding scene by throwing rice as the newlyweds exit the church. There are numerous ways to participate in the film throughout the night and Kahilu will have bags of props for sale, along with guides on how to participate. No water guns, hot dogs, prunes or food will be allowed in the auditorium, other than unbuttered toast and dry rice.

Bags will be checked at the door and no outside food, beverage or prohibited props will be allowed. This movie is rated R, those aged 17 and younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Tickets are $10 and available at kahilutheatre.org, by calling 885-6868 or at the Kahilu Theatre Box Office at 67-1186 Lindsey Road, Waimea, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Those 13 to 17 get in free when accompanied by a paying adult.
