New yoga class planned for seniors

Elderly Recreation Services is offering a new yoga class for seniors ages 55 and older. These classes are designed to keep the mind and body active. No experience is needed.

Classes are held at the West Hawaii Civic Center pavilion from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesdays starting Wednesday. Cost is $5, which is due at the beginning of class. Participants should bring a yoga mat, beach towel and water.

Lava flow update meeting is Thursday

A lava flow community update meeting with representatives from Hawaii County Civil Defense and the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Pahoa High School cafeteria.

Also, an informational resource center has been set up at the Pahoa Community Center. Residents are invited to the information center from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

VFW announces this week’s schedule

VFW post 12122 will host a dinner prepared by a guest chef from Fish Hopper restaurant Thursday. The surf-and-turf dinner with ribs and scampi will be $20. The event is limited to 50 people. Call Dick Skarnes at 818-384 7500 to make a reservation.

On Friday, the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW will be serving reuben sandwiches with chips for $5. For infomation, call 818-599-3297.

Book signing planned with vegan author

“Powerful Vegan Messages” author Anne Dinshah will be signing books and hosting a talk story at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Kona Stories on 78-6831 Alii Drive, suite 142.

She co-authored the book with her late father, American Vegan Society founder H. Jay Dinshah, and has authored and co-authored other books on the vegan lifestyle.

Participants experience other planets in Waimea’s Solar System Walk

Take a stroll to Venus, visit Saturn or experience the vastness of the solar system from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the fourth annual Waimea Solar System Walk, sponsored by the Canada France Hawaii Telescope and the W. M. Keck Observatory.

The two observatories build a half mile-long scale model of the solar system, with the sun at Keck Observatory, outer planets along Mamalahoa Highway and the farthest objects at the Canada France Hawaii Telescope headquarters. Observatory staff and volunteers will provide information and educational activities at various tents and visitors can record their space travels in a passport.

West Hawaii Astronomy club members will also be present, offering views of the sun through solar telescopes.

Kuikahi Mediation Center holds recognition dinner in Hilo

Kuikahi Mediation Center, in participation with the Hawaii County Bar Association, is hosting its ninth annual recognition dinner and auction in Hilo to fund its nonprofit human services agency.

No-host cocktails will be served at 5 p.m. with a buffet dinner served at 6. The event will include a silent auction, live auction and door prizes.

Tickets are $85, of which $50 is tax deductible, and are available from Kuikahi’s board of directors and from Kuikahi’s office in The Hilo Lagoon Centre at 101 Aupuni St., Suite PH 1014 B-2.
