Subaru Hawaii to donate $250 for each new car sold
Subaru Hawaii will donate $250 for each new 2014 or 2015 Subaru vehicle sold through Dec. 31 to the Hawaii Island Humane Society as well as Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawaii, Hawaii Wildlife Fund, Hawaiian Humane Society, Maui Humane Society, and Kauai Humane Society.
Also, the public is encouraged to vote for their favorite participating nonprofit organization at Subaru Hawaii’s Facebook page. At the end of the campaign, Subaru Hawaii will award the organization with the most votes an additional $5,000.
For the past four years Subaru Hawaii has partnered with Hawaii nonprofits donating more than $100,000 through Subaru Hawaii’s Share the Love sales campaign.
Ladies Auxiliary sending aloha to hospitalized soldiers
Members of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 12122 of Kona today will wrap holiday care package items for hospitalized soldiers at an army hospital in Landstahl, Germany. A total of 50 wounded soldiers will receive a pillowcase made from Hawaiian fabric with a pocket for letters and cards.
Korean War Veterans meet
The Korean War Veterans Association of West Hawaii chapter 279 will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at the VFW meeting hall at 74-5543 Kaiwi St. Suite 185a.

Friends of the Libraries Kona reducing prices at next book sale
Friends of the Libraries Kona will hold a book sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on the Kailua-Kona library lanai. Music CDs, cassettes, VCR tapes and LPs will no longer be sold or accepted as donations following this book sale. DVDs, books on CD and Hawaiian music CDs will still be accepted for sale or donation.
Music CDs, cassettes, VCR tapes and LPs, formerly priced at $1, will be discounted to 10 cents each. DVDs, books on CD and Hawaiian music will remain at the current published pricing.
Proceeds from sales support the needs of the Kona libraries. Volunteers are welcome and book donations are accepted. For more information, call 322-0077.
Boater safety class requirement to be enforced
The Department of Land and Natural Resources will begin enforcing its rule requiring all boaters to take a boating safety class to operate a motorized vessel Monday. Boaters will be required to show proof on demand of successful completion of an approved boating safety course.
Fines for rule violation will be not less than $50 and not more than $1,000 or sentencing to a term of imprisonment of not more than 30 days, or both, for each violation; the court may also prevent an individual from operating a vessel in state waters for up to 30 days.

Free youth archery class offered
The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation is accepting registrations through Nov. 11 for beginning and intermediate archery classes for youth ages 9 to 14. Classes will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. and 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays at Hale Halawai. Classes run for three weeks and are free. Equipment is provided; participants may bring their own equipment which must be approved by the director. A donation of large balloons is appreciated.

Newspaper seeks holiday event information
With the holiday season approaching, philanthropic Big Island residents are coming together to give time, energy, money and other gifts to various charity events. West Hawaii Today is compiling a list of these holiday charity events in our coverage area, which is from Kohala through Kona to Ka’u.
The deadline for submissions is by 5 p.m. Nov. 14 and will be strictly enforced. Submissions should be kept as brief as possible and include pertinent details, such as who is offering the event; time, date and where it will be held; what’s needed, being collected or donated; the cost and contact information.
Submissions will be edited to the newspaper staff’s discretion. Events costing $100 or more will not be published in this list. While West Hawaii Today makes every effort to accommodate all holiday charity event submissions, publication is not guaranteed. Space, content and parity will be considered.

Lyman Museum presents lecture on Kalaupapa
The Lyman Museum will present a lecture complementing their current exhibit on Kalaupapa from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10. Developed by Ka Ohana O Kalaupapa, “The Restoration of Family Ties” project has helped hundreds of families in Hawaii learn more about ancestors or loved ones sent to Kalaupapa between 1865 and 1969 because of policies regarding leprosy (Hansen’s disease). Ka Ohana coordinator Valerie Monson will share stories and information on preserving this chapter in the history of Hawaii.

The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation will close several parks in East Hawaii temporarily to treat for little fire ants.
Weather permitting, Liliuokalani Gardens will be closed Dec. 1, Hilo Bayfront Park will close Dec. 2, Honolii Beach Park will be treated Dec. 2, Kolekole Gulch Park will close Dec. 4, Machado Acres Park will be closed Dec. 4, Keaaau Senior Center will be treated Dec. 8, Kuhio Kalanianaole Park will be closed Dec. 8, Kamana Senior Center will be closed Dec. 9, Onekahakaha Beach Park will be closed Dec. 10, Panaewa Rainforest Zoo will be closed Dec. 17 and 18, Malama Park will be treated Dec. 22, Waiakeawaena Park, Andrews Gym will receive treatment Dec. 29.
