Naonosuke Sugai

Naonosuke Sugai, 104, of Kurtistown died Oct. 30, 2014, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Olaa, he was a retired carpenter for the former Theo H. Davies &Co. member of the Puna Covenant Church, a beekeeper, an Eagle Scout and a former scout master with the Boys Scouts of America Troop No. 36 in Kurtistown.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Nov. 15 at the Puna Covenant Church in Keaau, for a 10 a.m. service. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by son, Edward (Wendy) Sugai of Kurtistown; daughters, JoAnn Takahashi of Mililani, Hawaii, Esther (Robert) Schneider of Keaau, Ruth (Timothy) Kolb of Mililani, Florence (Wayne) Iwasaki of Honolulu; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mary Stevens

Mary Jane Stevens, 77, of Waimea died Nov. 1, 2014, at Hale Hoola Hamakua in Honokaa. Born in Paia, Maui, she was a homemaker and member of the Waimea Senior Citizens.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Kolekole Beach Park for a service. Family requests casual attire be worn.

She is survived by son, Phillip (Lee Aki) Hocson of Anahola, Kauai; daughters, Theresa (Max) Cabulizan of Waimea, Toni (Carlton) Bello of Pepeekeo, Jaye Hocson of Las Vegas; brother, Richard (Chanh Su) AhHeong of California; sisters, Catherine Matsuda and Julie (Juan) Pacheco, both of Hilo, Mary (Robert) Caravalho of Calif.; numerous stepchildren, 19 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Valerie Pua

Valerie (Andrade) Yukie Pua, 63, of Paauilo died Nov. 4, 2014, at Hale Hoola Hamakua. Born in Honokaa, she was a homemaker and member of the former Ookala Catholic Church.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Dodo Mortuary chapel, prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Friends may also call at 10 a.m. Nov. 17 at the Homelani Memorial Park, Ilima Section for a service and burial. The family requests casual attire be worn.

She is survived by husband, Patrick Pua of Paauilo; daughters, Valerie Pua and Patricia Pua, both of Paauilo; brothers, Lewis Andrade of Mountain View and Dennis Andrade of Ninole; sisters, Joan (Joseph) Dias-Souza of Paauilo and Doreen Anderson of Ninole; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Jennifer Cardines

Jennifer Ann Cardines, 39, of Hilo, died Oct. 19, 2014, at Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Care Center. Born June 3, 1975, in Hilo, she was a team member at KFC-Hawaii Prince Kuhio Plaza and member of Glad Tidings Church.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Nov. 15 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for an 11 a.m. service with cremation to follow. Family requests casual attire be worn.

She is survived by daughters, Ashley Mangibin, Kristin Cardines-Mangibin, Carmen Mangibin, all of Hilo; parents, Gilbert and Angie Cardines, both of Hilo; grandmother, Celestina Alika of Papaaloa; brothers, Mike (Jenn Sumera) Cardines of Hilo, Shane (Samantha) Cardines of Hawaiian Beaches; a niece, nephew, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Ronald Martinez

Ronald “Julio” Martinez, 73, of Hilo died Oct. 15, 2014, at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born Nov. 14, 1940, in Hilo, he was a retired Pearl Harbor crane operator and U.S. Army veteran.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Nov. 14 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hilo for a 10:30 a.m. serivce. Burial will follow at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by wife, Ying Martinez; sons, Ronald Martinez Jr., Randall Martinez and Heiko Christoph; daughter, Renee (Eric) Dayanan; brothers, George Martins and Dennis Martinez; sisters, Margaret Donato and Alice Vares; four grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and cousins.

Rosalina Tolentino

Rosalina A. Tolentino, 89, of Ookala, died Oct. 21, 2014, at Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Facility. Born Dec. 21, 1924, in Kukuihaele, she was a clerk for M. Nakahara Store in Hawi, a member of the Papaaloa St. Anthony Church, Maryknoll Sisters, Laupahoehoe Senior Citizens and Hawaii County Nutrition Program.

Friends may call at 6 p.m. Nov. 13 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 7 p.m. service.

Friends may also call at 9 a.m. Nov. 14 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Papaikou for a 10 a.m. service. Burial will follow at Mauna Kea Memorial Park (Kaieie Homestead Road) in Papaikou. Family requests casual attire be worn.
