HONOLULU — The Honolulu City Council has elected to delay voting on a proposal that would expand a ban on sitting and lying down on sidewalks beyond Waikiki.
Several council members said they didn’t have enough time to review amendments that were submitted before the scheduled vote Wednesday.
Advocates for homeless people said the initial Waikiki ban isn’t getting people off the streets. They said expanding the ban will make it harder on homeless families.
Supporters said it’s important to keep sidewalks clear for pedestrians. They said businesses can’t afford to have their entryways blocked.
The council voted to reconsider the proposal Friday.
If approved, the prohibition will be in effect from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. every night. Neighborhoods in downtown Honolulu, Kailua, Kaneohe and others would be impacted.
