A wind advisory has been posted for the Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa summits through 6 a.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu.

The service forecast west winds of 40 mph to 55 mph with gusts topping 65 mph for areas above 12,000 feet in elevation. The winds are expected to begin subsiding this afternoon.

The service cautioned that winds this strong can make driving or hiking in the area dangerous. Hikers and campers in the area are advised to seek shelter.
