Green waste at a facility on the Waimea side of the West Hawaii Sanitary Landfill in Puuanahulu is no longer smoldering, Jonn Medeiros, deputy director of Hawaii County Department of Environmental Management’s Solid Waste Division, said Tuesday.

As of 5 p.m. Monday, the fire was completely out and no smoldering was reported, he said adding that county-contracted Hawaii Earth Products is maintaining a 24-hour watch of the area. All operations at the facility resumed Tuesday.

The Hawaii Fire Department responded to a fire at the green waste site around 1:30 a.m. Saturday and by 8:30 a.m. the fire was listed as under control and contained. Smoldering continued for several days producing smoke visible to motorists and residents in the area.
