SAN JOSE, Calif. — Hawaii snapped a 17-game road losing streak and a four-game skid by shutting out San Jose State 13-0 on Saturday.
The victory was the first road win for coach Norm Chow at Hawaii (3-8, 2-4 Mountain West). The Warriors last win on the road was at Idaho in October 2011. It was Hawaii’s first shutout win since a 2005 win, also at Idaho.
Tyler Hadden kicked a 36-yard field goal in the second quarter and added a 32-yarder in the fourth. Joey Iosefa scored from the 1 for the game’s only touchdown with 18 seconds left in the first half, but was called for holding to nullify a second touchdown.
San Jose State (3-7, 2-4) almost doubled Hawaii’s total yards on offense (462-240) and had a 24-11 edge in first downs, but the Spartans could not score, missing three field goal attempts, dropping a pass in the end zone and having a second intercepted in the end zone.
San Jose State converted 12 of 19 third down attempts, but was just 1 of 4 on fourth down and fumbled twice.
San Jose State’s Joe Gray completed 25 of 45 pass attempts for 305 yards and Tyler Winston pulled down 10 passes for 86 yards. Tyler Ervin carried 19 times for 90 yards.
Gray drove to the Hawaii 2 midway through the second quarter, but on second and goal at the Hawaii 3-yard line, his pass was intercepted by Daniel Lewis Jr., who returned it to the Hawaii 20, where a penalty for an illegal block gave the Warriors a first down at the 10.
The Warriors then mounted a 14-play, 90-yard drive that took almost seven minutes to close out the first half. Iosefa carried 10 times on the drive, capping it with a 1-yard plunge for the touchdown.
