Fundraising efforts pay off for Honokaa People’s Theatre

The Honokaa People’s Theatre’s fundraising efforts for the purchase of a new $60,000 digital projector exceeded expectations, raising almost double the desired goal. Support from the Big Island Resource Conservation and Development Council and from in-house and online donations resulted in more than 500 contributions from the community in 60 days.

Because of digital media conversion, the theater needed a costly upgrade to avoid ending movie showings and closure, like Hilo’s Kress Theatre, which was unable to fund a digital conversion. The Honokaa theater, built in 1930 by the Tanimoto family, received almost $90,000 in a mix of small and large donations from resident families, historical enthusiasts and film and music supporters.

Additional contributions have been designated for the formation of a nonprofit organization to encourage arts and cultural programming and classes.

The theater is run by Dr. Tawn Keeney and his daughter, Phaethon.

For more information, to volunteer time or to submit nonprofit ideas, call 775-0000, email hpt@honokaapeople.com or visit honokaapeople.com.
