ESTERO, Fla. — Tim Derksen scored 21 points and led four players in double-figure scoring as San Francisco knocked off Hawaii 88-73 in the Gulf Coast Showcase tournament Monday night.
Hawaii, fresh off an upset of Pittsburgh on Friday night, was playing on the East Coast for the first time in two decades.
The Rainbow Warriors led late in the first half until Derrell Robertson hit two free throws with 1:25 left to give the Dons the lead. After Quincy Smith pulled Hawaii back to even at 30-30, Mark Tollefsen and Kruize Pinkins each converted layups to send San Francisco (3-0) to the locker room with a 34-30 lead.
Derksen was 7 of 13 from the field and 3 of 6 from long range. Pinkins added 19 points after converting 11 of 14 from the line.
Aaron Valdes scored 16 points to lead Hawaii (4-2), with Mike Thomas adding 13 points.
No. 3 Arizona 72, Missouri 53
LAHAINA, Maui — Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Brandon Ashley each scored 15 points, helping No. 3 Arizona wear down Missouri for a victory in the opening round the Maui Invitational on Monday.
Arizona (4-0) has struggled shooting from the perimeter this season and had another rough day from behind the arc, hitting a couple shots late to finish 5 of 16 from 3-point range.
The Wildcats made up for it on defense, holding Missouri (2-2) to 36 percent shooting while scoring 24 points off the Tigers’ 17 turnovers.
Freshman Stanley Johnson had 14 points for Arizona and T.J. McConnell nine assists to offset a 2-for-11 game from the floor.
Montaque Gill-Caesar led Missouri with 13 points.
Pittsburgh 81, Chaminade 68
LAHAINA, Maui — Michael Young had 27 points and 15 rebounds, and Pittsburgh rode a dominating performance on the glass to beat host Chaminade in the opening round of the Maui Invitational.
Pittsburgh (3-1) used its size to a big advantage, outrebounding the Silverswords 51-17, while scoring 34 points on 27 offensive boards.
Derrick Randall had 11 points and set a tournament record with 21 rebounds for the Panthers. James Robinson added 15 points.
Chaminade shot 51 percent and made 11 3-pointers, but was no match for Pittsburgh inside, giving up 15 straight points on putbacks in the first half to dig a big hole.
Kuany Kuany and Kevin Hu each had 12 points to lead the Division II Silverswords.
Kansas St. 88, Purdue 79
LAHAINA, Maui — Marcus Foster scored 24 points and Kansas State held on to beat Purdue after blowing most of a big early lead in the opening game of the Maui Invitational.
Coming off a disappointing loss to Long Beach State, Kansas State (3-1) attacked Purdue early, hounding the Boilermakers into one mistake after another while building a 15-point halftime lead.
Purdue (3-1) fought its way back into it behind Kendall Stephens, who scored 14 of his 21 points in the second half. The Boilermakers pulled within 75-70 on a 3-pointer by Stephens with just over 3 minutes left, but got no closer.
Isaac Haas added 19 points and six rebounds for Purdue.
