Luncheon honors Akina as Officer of the Month

The Kona Crime Prevention Committee will honor Officer Carrie Akina as the Officer of the Month at noon Wednesday at Huggo’s Restaurant for her outstanding performance as a member of the Hawaii Police Department. The guest speaker will be Dr. Sandra Scarr. The cost is $20, all inclusive. Reservations are required. Contact Liz Holey at lholey@hawaii.rr.com or by phone at 443-7708 prior to Monday, Dec. 1.

Tutu’s House hosts several programs

Tutu’s House in Waimea has announced several upcoming programs.

Inez Schultz, bereavement coordinator for North Hawaii Hospice will offer a Circle of Support Grief Group from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, and Dec. 8 and 15. Qigong exercises for self-treatment and healing will be demonstrated from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Dec. 5. A Parkinson’s and neuroplasticity support group with Madeline Sofranac, a doctor at Mana Physical Therapy, will meet from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Dec. 8. “Solar Electric on the Big Island: A New Reality” will be presented from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Dec. 8.

Feedback sought on state land use

The Office of Planning is holding meetings to hear from interested stakeholders on the effectiveness of the state’s land use system. These meetings may interest land owners and others who have experience with state land use, district boundary amendments and special permit matters.

Meetings, which are held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Aupuni Center in Hilo and from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority, will include an overview of the land use system. Participants will be asked to share their experiences and ideas for improvement.

Student aid workshop planned

A free financial aid workshop for parents and students regarding the Free Application for Federal Student Aid will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Kealakehe High School.

Attendees will learn about the Pell Grant, student loans, parent loans, scholarships, work study and applying for federal student aid. Reservations are not required.
