Donations sought to help children visit their incarcerated moms on Oahu
The Catholic Diocese of Honolulu’s Prison Ministry is collecting donations to bring together children and their mothers, incarcerated at the Women’s Community Correctional Center. Monetary donations are being accepted through Dec. 13 when a Christmas party will be held at the center.
The program, called “Star Light, Star Bright,” needs $19,000 to fly 59 children and 34 caregivers from the neighbor islands to Oahu.

Free gardening workshop offered in South Kona
The Dragonfly Ranch: Healing Arts Center in Honaunau is hosting a lecture by Joseph Dunsmoor, tropical agriculture educator of Kauai, at 2 p.m. Sunday. This two-hour workshop is called “Understanding Kona Soils: Tricks for Backyard Gardens and Orchards.”
During the free presentation, Dunsmoor will share knowledge on soil, crop feeding and hydroponics. He will cover topics including soil testing, recovering and processing waste and feeding and pruning fruit trees. Donations are accepted.

Double hull canoe subject at North Kohala Library
Sailor and canoe builder Kiko Johnston-Kitazawa will give a presentation on Waakaulua, the Hawaiian double hull canoe, at 6 p.m. Monday at North Kohala Public Library in Kapaau.
Johnston-Kitazawa, known as Captain Kiko, plans to bring a double hull canoe into the library to explain the canoe’s design and operation.

Alii Drive to be closed for gas work
Hawaii Gas will be performing maintenance work on its pipeline at the intersection of Alii Drive and Sarona Road. The work will require the closure of both lanes on Alii Drive from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. Tuesday through Dec. 12.
Pedestrians are urged to exercise caution near the construction zone. Police will be on site for traffic control and pedestrian safety. No loss of service is expected.

Kupuna Singles will meet for a no host buffet lunch Tuesday at Pizza Hut in Kailua-Kona.
Christian women’s gathering planned
Women of faith, as well as those seeking faith, are invited to a gathering Jan. 17 at Nani Mau Gardens in Hilo. The event has a theme of “Created in His Image,” and features three mainland speakers: Lindy Boone Michaelis, Belinda Dorsey and Jana Green.
The event also serves as a fundraiser for The Pregnancy Center.
