HONOLULU — The governor is appointing an executive at Hawaii’s largest health care provider to be the director of the state Department of Health.

Gov. David Ige on Friday announced the appointment of Dr. Virginia “Ginny” Pressler. Her appointment is subject to state Senate confirmation.

She is currently the executive vice president and chief strategic officer at Hawaii Pacific Health.

From 1999 to 2002 Pressler served as deputy director of the department’s Health Resources Administration.

Ige says she has more than 35 years of experience in the medical field and has held administrative positions for more than two decades. He calls her a well-respected member of Hawaii’s medical and business communities.

Keith Yamamoto is currently the department’s acting director.
