U.S. Postal Service officials expect Monday to be the busiest mailing day of the year, with more than 640 million cards, letters and packages expected to be processed nationwide. The Postal Service expects to process and deliver approximately 12.7 billion pieces of mail and 470 million packages between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year.

The Honolulu mail processing facility has been averaging processing 1.9 million pieces of mail daily since Thanksgiving, including more than 155,000 packages. The package volume is up 20 percent over last year’s holiday season.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
