Incinerator is not safe for residents
I’m confused. Are we trying to solve the county’s trash problem or build a legacy for our mayor by building an incinerator in his term? The environmental concerns are toward recycling as opposed to incinerating. One of our president’s major issues is air pollution — he plans to tax carbon emissions. Is this another cost that has not been considered?
In a West Hawaii Today article on Aug 25, Bobby Jean Leithead-Todd stated that we needed to generate 300 tons of trash per day for the incinerator in Hilo and 200 tons a day to meet our minimum daily requirement at Puuanahulu. We were collecting 451 tons a day.
The burning of 300 tons a day will generate approximately 90 tons of ash and 210 tons of air pollutants per day.
Councilman Dennis Onishi is concerned about the environmental impact on his Hilo constituents and rightly so, but the major impact will be on the expendables in West Hawaii. The prevailing trade winds will blow the polluted air between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa and the venturi effect should keep most of those pollutants airborne. As the winds split at Hualalai and enter the stable air over Waikoloa and Kona, the pollutants will then settle. Unlike Dr. Richard Creagan in his letter printed in West Hawaii Today on Dec. 1212, “Incinerator is not the answer to island’s trash problem,” I do not believe in “unintentional consequences” only poor and incomplete planning.
