Habitat for Humanity needs volunteers this week
Queen Liliuokalani Trust and Rivco Construction have partnered with Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii to take down the structure at the Swing Zone with the goal of saving as much reusable material as possible and keeping waste out of the landfill.
Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Friday to take down the building.Materials that are reusable will be used for small construction projects, Puna storm recovery, or will be sold at the Habitat ReStore.

Temporary one-way traffic enforced in Hilo
A temporary one-way traffic pattern will be enforced on Kapiolani Street in Hilo from 4 p.m. Christmas Eve to 3 a.m. Christmas Day and from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Christmas Day. Traffic will only be allowed to travel south Kapiolani Street between Waianuenue Avenue and Haili Street. During these times, parking will be allowed on both sides of Kapiolani Street.
Libraries close for Christmas
All public libraries will be closed Dec. 25. On Christmas Eve, all public libraries that normally offer Wednesday evening hours will close no later than 5 p.m. Visit librarieshawaii.org or call the local library for more information.
Kailua-Kona Seniors meetings announced
Kailua-Kona Seniors will curtail meetings at Hale Halawai for the coming two weeks. There will be no meeting Dec. 24 or 31.

VASH event held on cruise ship in Hilo
Mitch Roth, Hawaii County prosecuting attorney and a founding father of VASH Hawaii Island, was honored during the organization’s “Celebration of Aloha” Dec. 9 on board Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America in Hilo Harbor.
The organization offers assistance to those who face adversity during their visit to Hawaii Island by providing shelter, medical support, transportation and interpreters. VASH assisted 1,247 Hawaii Island visitors in 2013.

Christmas celebration includes kirtan
Aloha Farms in Pahoa will host a Christmas celebration at 5 p.m. Dec. 15. The event will include kirtan and dancing to live music. Kirtan is an ancient tradition of singing the names of God congregationally. The evening will finish with a home-cooked vegetarian feast and a bonfire.
