WAILUKU — State Department of Land and Natural Resources enforcement officers will be at the Maui Mall this weekend to tell people know about new fishing rules that took effect last month.

The department says the new rules affect the take of all uhu or parrot fish species. They also affect the take of many goat fish species such as kumu, moano kea, and weke.

Division of Conservation and Resources Maui Branch Chief Matt Yamamoto says Saturday’s event at the mall will help reach fishermen and answer their questions about the new rules.

He says it’s a preventative measure. He says officers would rather educate than issue citations.

More information on the new rules is available at www.dlnr.hawaii.gov/dar.
