WAILUKU) — Some Molokai residents are hailing four arrested fishermen as heroes for protecting their island’s resources from outsiders.
Four Molokai men pleaded not guilty Thursday in a Maui courtroom to allegedly boarding a vessel from Oahu and threatening the people on board.
The Maui News reports nearly 50 people filled the courtroom in support of the fishermen.
Hanohano Naehu is a Molokai representative for the Aha Moku Advisory Committee, which helps the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. He says the altercation highlights people going to Molokai from other islands to raid resources.
The alleged incident occurred in May. Maui police and the state officials arrested the men on Nov. 24. A jury trial is scheduled for March.
