Catherine Karol

Catherine Karol, 89, of Holualoa died Dec. 13, 2014, at her residence. Born March 28, 1925, in Easton, N.Y., she was a secretary with General Electric.

Services were held.

She is survived by sons, James (Sylka) Karol of El Paso, Texas, Thomas Karol of Holualoa; sister, Julia (Manuel) Ballestero of Boston Lake, N.Y.; brother, Paul (Shirley) Peregrim of Argyle, N.Y.; three grandchildren; hanai daughter, Dorine Peregrim, of the mainland.

Alvin Cogo

Alvin Jayme Cogo, 41, of Keaau died Dec. 13, 2014, at home. Born July 31, 1973, in Salinas, Calif., he was a homemaker.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Dec. 23 at Pahoa Sacred Heart Catholic Church for a 10 a.m. service. Urn burial will follow at the church cemetery. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by parents, Fermin and Aida Cogo of Keaau; brothers, Henry (Kelly) Cogo of Waiakea Uka, William Cogo of Keaau and James (Tristan Iranon-Estrella) Cogo of Phoenix, Ariz.; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Shizuka Motoishi

Shizuka Motoishi, 92, of Pepeekeo, died Dec. 15, 2014, at the Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center. Born in Onomea, she was a homemaker and a former independent cane planter and member of Hilo Hooganji Mission Kyodan, Honomu Henjoji Mission Kyodan, Fujinkai and Kongo-ko.

Friends may call at 4 p.m. Dec. 23 at the Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 5 p.m. service. Cremation to follow. The family requests casual attire and that flowers and monetary donations (koden) be omitted.

She is survived by sons, Michael (Donna) Motoishi of Hilo and Harold Motoishi and Wayne Motoishi, both of Pepeekeo; daughter, Sue (Danny) Escalona of Pepeekeo; brother, Wallis Nagareda of Papaikou; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Puanani Marciel

Puanani Marciel, 69, of Kailua-Kona, died November 15, 2014 at Nakamaru Hale in Holualoa. Born January 14, 1945 in Honolulu, she was a corrections officer at both OCCC and HCCC and a stained glass artist.

A private service will be held at a later date.

She is survived by son, Joshua Marciel of Santa Cruz, Calif.; daughter, Manu (Liam) Powers of Kailua-Kona; brother, David (Elizabeth) Marciel of Maui; sisters, Nawelo (Ken) Shapiro of Sausalito, Calif., Kilauea Marciel of Kailua-Kona, Cathy Mulherin of Maui; five grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Belen Ruiz

Belen Jimenez Ruiz, 73, of Hilo died Dec. 6 at her residence. Born at Clark Air Force Base, Philippines, she was a homemaker, member of Heritage Christian Fellowship and the Red Hat Society of Hilo.

Services have been held.

She is survived by sons, Michael (Patricia) Ruiz of Elk Grove, Calif., David Ruiz of Hilo; daughter, Melisa (Matthew) Mossman of Vacaville, Calif.; brothers, Floro (Emilia) Jimenez of Pacifica, Calif., Daniel (Marilyn) Jimenez of the Philippines, Rufino (Socorro) Jimenez Jr. of San Bruno, Calif.; sisters, Purita Baros of Concord, Calif., Loretta Utanes of Vallejo, Calif., Marian Jimenez of San Leandro, Calif.; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; numerous nieces and nephews.
