Volunteers remove invasive plants from Mauna Kea

Nearly 300 community members gave approximately 2,000 hours of volunteer time to remove 400 bags of invasive species from Mauna Kea this year as part of the Office of Mauna Kea Management’s Malama Maunakea campaign.

Volunteers removed fireweed and other invasive species to prevent their spread to higher elevations. Teams also helped restore the area with native species to prevent the establishment of other unwanted species such as invasive ants.

Groups participating in the Malama Maunakea campaign included Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce, Hawaii National Guard Youth Challenge Academy, Ke Ana Laahana Public Charter School, Hawaii Academy of Arts and Sciences Public Charter School, various UH-Hilo student clubs, Circle K (Kiwanis), Waiakea Interact (Rotary), Pacific Quest Hawaii and numerous members of astronomy community.

To volunteer, contact Fritz Klasner at 933-3194 or fklasner@hawaii.edu.
