Free video production class offered

Na Leo O Hawaii offers a free video production orientation from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at its facility in Kaiwi Square, 74-5565 Luhia St., Suite C1-A, Kailua-Kona.

Hui Laulima meets Friday

West Hawaii Hui Laulima will meet from 10:30 a.m. to noon Friday in the West Hawaii Community Health Center meeting room on the ground floor.

Jessica and Michael Stack, corps officers of the Salvation Army in Kona, will provide information about their programs. Tami MacAller, coordinator, Coalition for Tobacco-Free Hawaii, will present an update on e-cigs.

The hui is a consortium of West Hawaii’s major health and human service providers, faith-based groups, community associations, businesses, government and concerned individuals. It was formed to encourage collaboration around matters affecting West Hawaii’s youth and families, including the elderly.

Household hazardous waste collected in Waimea

Residential household hazardous waste will be collected at no charge from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Waimea Recycling and Transfer Station.

Business, government agency, farm waste and electronics will not accepted. Automotive fluids, used batteries, fluorescent lights, pesticides and latex paint will be accepted. For a list of acceptable or unacceptable waste, visit hawaiizerowaste.org.

The next West Hawaii collection will be June 13 at the Kealakehe transfer station.

Sam Choy gives free breadfruit cooking demonstration

Chef Sam Choy will hold a free breadfruit cooking demonstration at KTA in Kailua-Kona from 10 a.m. to noon Friday.

Free recipes and other information about breadfruit will be on hand, and breadfruit will be for sale in the store while supplies last.

The event is a part of the Breadfruit vs. Potato initiative of the Hooulu ka Ulu project. The initiative seeks to increase food self-sufficiency in Hawaii by substituting locally grown staples for imported foods. Each year 57 million pounds of fresh and processed potato are imported into the state.

Choy will demonstrate how to easily cook breadfruit and will share recipes that can be made with breadfruit instead of potato.

Holualoa holds Friday art event

Holualoa Village will hold Art After Dark from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Featured will be new works of art, music and refreshments at many of the village art galleries and shops. Holuakoa Gardens and Cafe will hold wine tasting for $10. Reservations are requested.

Free parking is available at the town parking lot and Holualoa School.

Kona Community Hospital Auxiliary meets Monday

The Kona Community Hospital Auxiliary will hold its monthly board meeting at 1 p.m. March 9 in the hospital conference room. Visitors are welcome. The public is also invited to a bake sale held from 7 to 9 a.m. Fridays in the hospital cafeteria.
