Teen week coming up at Kailua-Kona Public Library

Friends of the Libraries Kona Teen Tech Week starts today with an Instagram photo contest. Details and rules are posted on the Hawaii State Public Library System website, or participants may call the Kailua-Kona Public Library at 327-4327 for more information. The winner will receive a $25 Amazon gift card.

Also, video gaming on a Wii U console will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. March 10. Hyrule Warriors and Xenoblade Chronicles will be played. Free chips and soda will be available. Regular gaming programs will be held every month at Kailua-Kona Public Library.

Finally, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. March 14, youth are invited to make a cellphone charging station or phone cover. The Instagram Photo Contest winner will be announced at the event.

Rainwater catchment workshops planned

The University of Hawaii Sea Grant College Program will hold free community workshops on rainwater catchment systems, safety, monitoring and proper maintenance. Water quality testing kits and instructions will be provided to attendees free of charge.

The workshop will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Oceanview Community Center, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Naalehu Community Center, from 9 to 11 a.m. March 21 at the North Hawaii Education &Research Center in Hamakua, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. March 21 in the Konawaena High School cafeteria and from 9 a.m. to noon March 23 at West Hawaii Civic Center.

Also, a two-day professional rainwater workshop will be offered March 24 and 25 at Kilauea Military Camp in Volcano. Cost is $495 for nonmembers, $395 for American Rainwater Catchment Systems Association members.

Friday meals benefit veterans programs

VFW is offering “Red Aloha Fridays” in March, in which a $5 dinner benefits veterans programs in West Hawaii.

Onion burgers will be served Friday. Spaghetti will be on March 13, homemade pizza is planned for March 20 and tacos will be served March 27.

All are welcome.

Planning meeting set

Lai Opua 2020, government and community stakeholders who play a central part of the regional planning and development of Kealakehe and Keahuolu ahupuaa will convene to share information from 8:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. March 11 at West Hawaii Civic Center in Building G.

Refreshments and a light lunch will be served. Hawaii County managing director Wally Lau will speak. The planning and development initiatives and discussions include, Kona Judiciary Complex, Keauhou aquifer designation, Makaeo and Kealakehe regional park initiatives.
