Brenda Araki

Brenda May Araki, 62, of Hilo died March 1, 2015, at home. Born in Hilo, she was a retired housekeeper for Hilo Medical Center and member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Friends may call at 6 p.m. March 16 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 7 p.m. service. Friends may also call at 8:30 a.m. March 17 at St. Joseph Catholic Church for a 10 a.m. Mass, followed by burial at Alae Cemetery. The family requests casual attire be worn.

She is survived by husband, Derrick Araki of Hilo; daughters, Tracey (Chauncy) Turnage of North Carolina, Amy (Kaholo Troy) Bullock of Hilo; mother, Janet Ayala of Honomu; brother, Larry Ayala of Honomu; sisters, Debra (David) Lerma of Pepeekeo, Danette Ayala of Hilo; 10 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Marlin Werner

Marlin Spike Werner, 87, of Papaikou died Feb. 10, 2015, at his residence. Born Aug. 15, 1927, in Portland, Maine, he was retired from private practice as an audiologist and a consultant to hearing aid dispensers, private physicians and hospitals in Hilo, and member of Speleological Society, Hilo Palm Society, Virea Society, Film Club, American Bamboo Society and Curmudgeons of Hilo.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. March 16 at Hilo Coast United Church of Christ in Honomu. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Carlinville, Ill. Memorial donations may be made to The Salvation Army, Hilo.

He is survived by son, Leo (Maryann) Hart of Colorado; daughters, Marlene (Henry) Kaim, Catherine (Phil) Boder, both of Colorado; numerous grandchildren.

Howard Mimaki

Howard Jitsuo Mimaki, 83, of Hilo died March 5, 2015, at Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Care Center. Born Oct. 15, 1931, in Hilo, he was a retired administrator from the Hawaii State High Technology Development Corp., Hawaii Island liaison officer for the former governor, insurance agent for Occidental Life Insurance Co. and member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. March 17 at Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin, 398 Kilauea Ave., for an 11 a.m. service. Family requests no monetary gifts or flowers.

He is survived by wife, Nobuko Mimaki of Hilo; daughter, Mari (Dale) Vermeer of Kailua, Oahu; son, Lane Mimaki of Hilo; brothers, Calvin Mimaki of Kaneohe, Oahu, Raymond (Violet) Mimaki of Hawaii Kai, Oahu; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth Haweaokalani Waiau

Elizabeth Haweaokalani Desha Brown Waiau, 90, of Hilo died Feb. 24, 2015, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Jan. 30, 1925, in Hilo, she was a retired teacher at Hilo High School. She was also a member of Haili Congregational Church, Haili Church Choir, Haili Cantata Choir, Haili Women’s Choir, Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame and was former director of Haili Cantata Choir, Haili Youth Choir and the Hilo Hawaiian Civic Club.

Friends may call at 4 p.m. March 20 at at Haili Congregational Church for a 5:30 p.m. service. Refreshments will follow. Friends may also call March 21 at Haili Congregational Church for an 8:30 a.m. Hawaii Island Congregational Church hoike, a 10:30 a.m. paina and an 11:30 a.m. service. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Homelani Memorial Park, Section 1. Family requests aloha attire be worn.

She is survived by sons, Kaina Lee (Robin Healani) Waiau, Kaimi Ralph Waiau, Kaleo James (Shelley) Waiau, Keala Leopold (Jeanette) Waiau; 9 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Sarah Ruis

Sarah Kaawa Lau O Puna “Ukulii” Kaupiko Ruis of Waimea died Feb. 5, 2015, at Kohala Hospital. Born Sept. 22, 1929, in Milolii, she was a fisherwoman, owner of Sarah’s Ranch, a dairy farmer, co-owner of Ruis Enterprises Inc., member of Waimea Hawaiian Civic Club, Waimea Hawaiian Homesteaders Association, Kaahumanu Society, Kawaihae Canoe Club, Imiola Congregational Church, Hauoli Kamanao Church, Hale O Na Alii O Hawaii and Halau O Kelii Ahonui.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. March 28 at Hauoli Kamanao Church in Milolii for a 10:30 a.m. service. Family requests aloha or casual attire be worn. Lei and loose flowers are welcome. Condolences may be sent to the family at P.O. Box 959, Kamuela, HI, 96743.

She is survived by sons, Wayne (Jackie) Kaupiko of Kailua-Kona, Wilbert (Marie) Kaupiko of Waimea; five stepchildren; brother, Wilfred (Anita) Kaupiko of Milolii; sisters, Winona Tahara, Naomi (Anli) Naipo, both of Hilo; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews.
