Today marks four years since the March 11, 2011, tsunami triggered by a magnitude-9.0 earthquake that struck in waters off Tohoku, Japan, hit the Big Island’s coast.

The tsunami resulted in 15,891 confirmed deaths with another 2,600 still missing in Japan, according to the most current data supplied by the National Police Agency of Japan’s Emergency Disaster Countermeasures Headquarters. It also caused meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. Click here for additional details.

In Hawaii, it caused millions in damage along the state’s coasts, particularly along the leeward coast of the Big Island.
