The “Cat’s Eye Jewelry Dresser” by Tom Pasquale, an elevated curly koa jewelry box with drawers also made from koa, was deemed Best in Show during this year’s Winter Wood Show at Harbor Gallery.
The show ended Feb. 14 and the votes for each of the four categories were totaled to determine the winners. Pasquale’s piece was voted Best in Show and he received a $250 award. Pieces with the most votes in each category received first place and a $100 award.
First place in joinery was Frank Chase’s curly koa highboy dresser with milo wood trim and handles. The dovetailed drawers of mahogany present fragrant aromatic cedar drawer bottoms and the bookmatched drawer fronts show off the striped, curly koa wood in breathtaking colors and beauty. The German hardware made by Blum offers the quiet “soft close” feature to enhance to smooth operation of each drawer.
Frist place for sculpture was Craig Nichols’ “Graceful Seafarer,” a Hawaiian monk seal of curly koa with a support member of mamane and a base of mango wood.
First place in turning was Rick Frazier’s segmented vessel of mostly koa, adorned with petroglyphs and standing 48 inches tall.
First place in the open category was David Gallegos’ “Kawaihae Sunset Triptych,” a three-piece painting of a single view done on mango wood, with the outlines of the image burned into the wood first, and then the painting of many layers of thinned out paint applied and dried over several months so that the image is clear but the wood grain still shows through the image.
