WAILUKU — The Maui man accused of stabbing his mother to death told police she tried to stab him during an argument and he took the knife from her.

The Maui News reported Friday police say the tip of a knife was found in Kimberly Vinuya’s skull. According to an affidavit, her son Keoni Vinuya Tomas told police she tried to hit him with a bat. Tomas told police he stabbed and clubbed her.

Police found Vinuya Monday with deep cuts to her back, face, hands and head.

Tomas is being held on $1 million bail. He couldn’t be reached for comment at Maui Community Correctional Center. He’s expected to receive a court-appointed attorney.

Police say Tomas had two bloody folding knives, with the tip broken on one of them.
