Rotary Club of North Hawaii offers community grants

Rotary Club of North Hawaii is accepting applications from nonprofits and community organizations for grants ranging from $500 to $1,500. Applications must be postmarked no later than April 30. To obtain an application, go to north-hawaii-rotary.org and click on “community grant application 2015.”

Kona Library Book Club meets

The Kona Library Book Club meets at 11 a.m. Tuesday on the lanai of the Kailua-Kona Library to discuss “Life After Life” by Kate Atkinson.

Participants can count on light refreshments and a lively discussion. The group will meet in April to discuss “The Pilot’s Wife” by Anita Shreve.

Prediabetes classes offered in Waimea

North Hawaii Community Hospital is offering free prediabetes educational classes.

The program consists of three classes, held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the hospital’s Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa Conference Rooms. Classes are scheduled for Tuesday, March 24 and 31; April 6, 13, and 20; May 6, 13, and 20; June 9, 23 and 30 and July 15, 22 and 29. Self referrals and physician referrals are welcome.

Topics covered will include nutritional education, carbohydrate vs. protein, the importance of exercise for good health and awareness of complications caused by uncontrolled diabetes.

VFW Ladies Auxiliary plans St. Patrick’s Day celebration

The Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 12122, will meet March 21 at 10:30 a.m. at the VFW Post, 74-5543 Kaiwi St., Suite 185A, in Kailua-Kona.

On Tuesday, a St. Patrick’s Day celebration is planned from 5 to 8 p.m., with Lee Stewart providing music. The cost is $15 and reservations are available by calling the post at 326-5675.

Summer program explores agricultural and natural resource careers

University of Hawaii at Manoa’s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources will be host the Hawaii AgDiscovery Program July 12 through 25, for students 14 to 17 years old. The program gives its participants a first-hand look at the many career paths open to them in agriculture and natural resource management, including plant and animal sciences, wildlife management and agribusiness. Deadline to apply is Friday.

Students chosen to participate will gain experience through hands-on laboratories, workshops, field trips, and character- and team-building activities.

Feb. 2: Shirley Decker and Gerald Mitchell won first place, Butchie Hayward and James Elstran came in second.

Feb. 4: North/south first place winners were Stuart Vance and Peter Mitchellopolis; second, Marlene Sabo and Michael Folkert. Winning east/west first were Dean Jenkins and Craig Ross; second, Marilynn Bass and JoAn Hill.

Feb. 6: North/south first went to Shirley Decker and Carol Richards. Jack Buchanan and Will Williams took second. East/west first place winners were Dan Sabo and Sue Kaneta; second, James Elstran and Marilynn Bass.

Feb. 8: North/south first went to Michael Folkert and Marlene Sabo; second, Joan Stark and Edward Stark. East/west first place winners were Craig Ross and Dean Jenkins. Jack Buchanan and Will Williams won second.
