Adult taiko classes offered

Beginner adult taiko , or Japanese drum, sessions will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays March 31 through May 26 in Kona Daifukuji Cultural Hall, next to Teshima’s restaurant in Honalo.

Participants will learn the basics of playing the Japanese drum, techniques and culture behind taiko drumming. Attendance is required at all classes. An open house is planned from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday and March 24.

Cost for the eight classes is an $80 nonrefundable fee plus supplies. Space is limited. Sign up by March 24.

Boys &Girls Club awards banquet planned in Hilo

Boys &Girls Club Big Island invites the community to “Inspiring Youth,” the third annual Youth of the Year awards banquet and fundraiser from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel Moku Ola Ballroom.

Benjamin Cortez Jr. and Tyler Nahinu are this year’s Youth of the Year candidates. The winner will be announced at the event.

Culinary students raising money to attend national conference

West Hawaii culinary students will hold a bake and garage sale fundraiser at Great American Storage from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
