HAGATNA, Guam — The medical director of Guam Memorial hospital has been appointed to fill in as interim administrator following the hospital chief’s sudden resignation.

Guam newspaper Pacific Daily News reports Larry Lizama is taking over the top position from outgoing administrator Joseph Verga.

Before his new assignment, Lizama had been working as the hospital’s associate administrator for medical services.

Verga says in a hospital press release that his resignation comes with “deep regret and for very personal reasons.” In the release, Verga says his departure was “an unexpected and very painful decision.”
