Kona Pacific hosts reading workshop
Kona Pacific Public Charter School invites families to participate in the fourth of a series of seven free workshops designed to support a child’s developing love of books and reading. The workshop is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the school campus above Kona Community Hospital in Kealakekua. This workshop, “Storytelling as a Pathway to Literacy,” will focus on this traditional form of literacy and how it can serve to spark a love for books and reading.
The workshop events begin at 5:30 p.m. with a light dinner and social time, followed by a one-hour workshop. Childcare will be provided, and children will be invited to select a book to take home. Workshops are free and open to any interested community members.

State conducting water workshop
The state Commission on Water Resource Management will conduct a water workshop from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the West Hawaii Civic Center. The purpose of the workshop is to inform the community about the commission’s current effort to update the statewide Water Resource Protection Plan and to receive input on water resource issues.
The workshop will include a short slideshow about the plan after which attendees will break into smaller groups to talk in more detail about specific water resource issues in the community. Refreshments will be provided.

Keiki story time planned in Keauhou
With the help of the American Association of University Women, Kona Stories Book Store will host a story time best suited for children ages 3 to 7 at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the courtyard of the Keauhou Shopping Center. The theme for March is trains, featuring stories from books like “The Little Engine That Could.”
There is a $5 participation fee to cover crafts and snack. Space is limited to 24 children and reservations are required. Check in 10 minutes early at Kona Stories. For more information or to make a reservation, call 324-0350.
Malaai School Garden anniversary celebration postponed
Because of inclement weather, the 10th anniversary celebration of the Malaai School Garden slated on March 11 was delayed. It will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Waimea Middle School.
STEM-related scholarships available
The National Science Foundation has awarded the University of Hawaii at Hilo a $622,175 grant to support the Scholarships for STEM Program, a new program that provides scholarships for academically talented, economically disadvantaged high school seniors who major in one of the following STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) disciplines: astronomy, biology, chemistry, computer science, environmental science, geology, marine science, mathematics, and physics. The application deadline is April 15.
The S-STEM Program will provide each scholar with a $20,000 scholarship for four years of undergraduate studies (up to $5,000 per year), provided that the student maintains good academic standing and remains a STEM major. The program will also integrate and expand existing educational services for STEM students at UH-Hilo.
Students will be selected on the basis of academic potential, motivation and interest in the STEM disciplines, as indicated by their high school GPA, standardized test scores, a letter stating interests, and letters of reference.
Academic support services for the program include faculty mentoring; peer tutoring for introductory stem courses; summer and academic year research support on campus; opportunities for research internships; advising and support to participate in summer research programs at U.S. mainland universities; participation in a newly established freshman STEM course; opportunities to present research in campus-wide, state and regional venues; and participation in a community service program in which students will provide math and science tutoring for K-12 students.
