LIHUE — Authorities say two people have drowned in separate incidents off Hawaii’s Kauai Island.

The Garden Island newspaper reports a 48-year-old Arizona man died Sunday after he showed signs of distress and struggled with his mask and snorkel off Mahaulepu Beach in Poipu.

Responders say CPR was performed on the victim, David Deville, but he was pronounced dead at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where he was taken.

Kauai police say the other drowning occurred Saturday afternoon about 30 yards offshore from Plantation Hale in Wailua.

Responders say 72-year-old Michael Stone of Boston appeared to be in distress and was unresponsive when he was brought to shore.

CPR was performed, but Stone was pronounced dead at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where he was transported.
