Scholarship for Kealakehe seniors announced

Kealakehe High School students who want to with their hands or with computers are invited to apply for Joseph E. Spadaro Scholarships for a two-year degree from the Transportation and Applied Technology Department at Hawaii Community College. Preference will be given to students from the Waikoloa area.

Last year’s recipient is studying for an associate’s degree in auto mechanics. Other programs include auto body repair, Cisco networking, diesel mechanics and welding,

The scholarships are awarded by Friends of the Library – Waikoloa through contributions of the Spadaro family. Scholarships cover tuition, fees, required books and supplies. Interested seniors ­may contact Jeanne Hartney, counselor at Kealakehe High School, at 313-3621 for more information. The deadline to apply is April 3.

Camp Tarawa Marines meet Saturday

The Camp Tarawa Detachment 1255 of the Marine Corps League meets Saturday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post located at 74-5543 Kaiwai St., Suite 185A, behind Kona Locksmith. A “no—host” lunch begins at 11:30 a.m., the business meeting at 1 p.m. All serving, retired or reserve Marines and Navy corpsmen and their spouses are invited to attend. Dress is resort casual.

Elks planning Survivor’s Supper

Kona Elks Lodge 2616 will conduct its first Survivor’s Supper at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the lodge. The event will be hosted by the lodge’s own cancer survivor, Elmer Jensen. Ten percent of proceeds will go to Kona Community Hospital’s cancer unit. All members are invited to celebrate their life along with other members and guests who have or know someone who has beaten their own threatening disease.

A meal will be served with homemade baked ziti, caesar salad, garlic bread and a dessert. Entertainment will be provided by The Kona Angels. Cost for both dinner and music is $15.

Garden cleanup day set at Greenwell Garden

Everyone is invited to join staff and volunteers on a garden cleanup day from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday. Dry season is here and it’s a chance to gain some ground on the weeds. Bring a hat, sunscreen and a water bottle. The garden will provide gloves, tools and cold water to refill bottles.

All cleanup volunteers are invited to stay for the Hawaiian plant walk, a guided tour of the garden offered every day at 1 p.m. The admission fee will be waived for volunteers.

The garden is located on Mamalahoa Highway in Captain Cook, 12 miles south of Kailua-Kona.

Niihau Shell workshops hosted at Lyman Museum

Kele Kanahele, master shell lei maker from the island of Niihau, returns to the Lyman Museum to teach a Niihau shell workshop on April 3 and 4 in Hilo.

Kele will teach how to create a beautiful necklace (lei) and earrings in the lokelani style using both momi lenalena (yellow) shells and your choice of pink or red kahelelani shells. On either day you may learn how to make a 22-inch necklace ($270 for museum members, $280 nonmembers) or a pair of earrings ($75 members, $85 nonmembers) — or more than one piece, as long as you sign up for specific pieces in advance. Classes run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

Space is limited to 24 persons per day; only people who have registered can be permitted in the classroom. Reservations must be made, pieces specified, and the workshop fee(s) paid by March 28, to ensure your place and the availability of shells.

Two magic shows slated Saturday

The Society for Kona’s Education & Art and the Big Island Magic Club present the 29th annual Magic Spectacular Saturday at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu. The longest running magic show in the islands, this year’s event features the “Magic of Sterling Dietz,” as well as local favorites Arnie “Arneleo the Great” Rabin, Barry “the Great Barusky” Gitelson, Bruce and Jennifer Meyers, Albert The Great and Adrian Villasenor and family. Shows are at 2:30 and 7 p.m.

Ticket prices are $10 for children, $15 for adults and are available at Patels, Kona Stories, Kiernan Music, Kona Bay Books, and the SKEA office at 328-9392.

Car show to benefit baby with Hydrocephalus

A car show Sunday will benefit Cassidy, a baby diagnosed with Hydrocephalus. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Big Island Honda in Kailua-Kona and will include entertainment, a silent auction, a drawing and food.
