Project Compassion scheduled Sunday

Therapeutic Horsemanship of Hawaii – Kona is the featured nonprofit for this month’s Project Compassion. This event is a partnership between the Rotary Club of Kona and Denny’s Restaurant to support local nonprofits. From 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Denny’s will donate 20 percent of all food and beverage sales to THH-Kona and servers will donate 100 percent of their tips. Na Hoku Hanohano Award winning slack key guitarist John Keawe will perform from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. THH-Kona’s miniature horses, Peaches and Calypso, will also be there.

THH-Kona provides riding and equine facilitated therapy and educational activities to 50 children, youth and adults with special needs. Also, Peaches and Calypso make visits to nursing homes, schools, senior centers and private homes.

Bond to speak at North Kohala library

North Kohala Public Library in Kapaau will host a “talk story” session on Hawaii’s history with North Kohala historian Boyd D. Bond at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

The talk, “Kamehameha III, King in a time of transition,” will focus on the life of Hawaii’s longest ruling monarch and the many changes that came to Hawaii during his reign.

AARP driver safety class planned

The Kona Palisades Association is sponsoring an AARP “Smart Driver” class Monday at the Palisades Recreation Center on lower Kaiminani Drive in Kona.

The class offers techniques to help older drivers stay safe.

This class, which starts at 1 p.m., does not include driving or written tests only quizzes. It covers subjects that may affect drivers as they age, such as hearing, eyesight, reflexes, safety rules, road rage, rules of the road, problems at intersections and drinking and driving.

Participants may receive a discount on their insurance.

Professional coaching program planned

Tutu’s House presents Mary Kuentz, professional certified coach, discussing “Coaching for Transformation” from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Monday. This interactive workshop is an introduction to professional coaching, a growing field that helps people navigate the transformations for which they yearn. Attendees will learn basic coaching skills to shift day-to-day conversations into an opportunity to transform.

There are no fees for Tutu’s House programs, but tax-deductible donations are welcome. To register, call 885-6777.

Big Island Press Club offers scholarships

The Big Island Press Club is offering scholarships for eligible students pursuing higher education in journalism or a related field. The club annually offers $1,500 Robert C. Miller Memorial Scholarship, $1,000 Bill Arballo Scholarship, $1,000 Marcia Reynolds Scholarship, $600 Yukino Fukubori Memorial Scholarship and the $500 Jack Markey Memorial Scholarship. Last year, Big Island Press Club awarded $4,600 to five Hawaii Island students.

To qualify, applicants must have residential ties to Hawaii Island, express a clear interest in and aptitude for a career in journalism or a related field, be pursuing a degree in journalism or a related field and enrolled full-time at an accredited college or university and maintain a strong record of academic achievement.

Application forms and instructions are available at bigislandpressclub.org and will be available from high school counselors at Hawaii Island schools. Applications must be postmarked by April 18.

Offier of the Month luncheon is Wednesday

The Kona Crime Prevention Committee to honor Officer Elsworth Fontes as its “Officer of the Month” luncheon slated for noon Wednesday at Huggo’s restaurant in Kona.

Fontes is being honored for his outstanding performance as a member of the Hawaii Police Department. The guest speaker will be Hawaii County Fire Department Capt. Kazuo Todd.

The Kona Crime Prevention Committee encourages and supports the police department in its efforts to prevent crime, deter potential criminals and enforce laws. The committee also provides needed police equipment for use by Kona District officers when department funds cannot support those needs.

The public is invited to attend the luncheon. The cost of the luncheon is $20, all inclusive. Reservations are required and may be made by contacting Liz Holey at lholey@hawaii.rr.com or 443-7708 by Monday.
