Police arrest 21 for suspected DUI on Big Island

Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant from March 23 through Sunday. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Five were younger than 21.

Five drivers were arrest in the Kona District, according to the Hawaii Police Department. Police in South Kohala arrested two motorists, South Hilo officers cited eight drivers, Puna officers nabbed five drivers and one driver were arrested in Ka‘u District.

So far this year, there have been 234 DUI arrests compared with 323 during the same period last year, a decrease of 27.6 percent

There have been 344 major accidents so far this year compared with 417 during the same period last year, a decrease of 17.5 percent.

So far this year, there have been six traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with three during the same period last year, an increase of 50 percent.

To date, two fatalities were related to drugs.
