HONOLULU — The Navy says the 21-year-old man who fell about 50 feet to his death off an Oahu hiking trail was a Pearl Harbor-based sailor from Florida.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser newspaper reports the hiker was with a group when he fell shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday on the Pali Notches trail.

The Navy on Monday identified him as Johnathan McNeely of Lake Wales, Florida. He was stationed aboard the USS John Paul Jones at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Kendall Ching says the hiker was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Navy says McNeely died of traumatic injuries sustained in the fall. Honolulu police are investigating.

The Navy says thoughts and prayers are with his family, loved ones and shipmates.
