Storytelling, Okinawan library programs held
Hawaii’s public libraries will offer free educational and entertaining programs to celebrate National Library Week.
Local storyteller Ben Moffat will offer a storytelling performance titled “Mr. Spelunker’s Adventures” using puppetry, stilts magic and music. The program is suitable for people ages 3 and older. It is offered at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Honokaa Public Library and at 2:30 p.m. April 15 at Pahala Public Library.
Also, an Okinawan performing arts group will present traditional folk dances, the classical art of kumiwudui, and contemporary dance with taiko at 3 p.m. April 18 at Kailua-Kona Public Library.

Orchid Society meeting Friday
The Kona Orchid Society meets at 6 p.m. Friday at Makua Lani Christian Academy, 74-4966 Kealakaa St., off Palani Road.
The speaker will be Mel Waki of Honolulu will speak on honohono (anosmum) orchids. He will cover the lifecycle as well as a demonstration of how to place cuttings in sphagnum moss and 2-inch pots. All attendees will pot their own and take them home.
Potluck will be served at 6:15 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to bring a dish to share.
There will be a show and tell followed by an orchid drawing.

Waimea Town Market hosts steel drum performance
Jessica Salerno-Woodbury will perform music on steel drums from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Waimea Town Market at Parker School. The performance will feature an eclectic mix of Caribbean calypso, jazz, classical and popular music. This unique concert is free and open to all.

Woodturners meet Saturday
The West Hawaii Woodturners, a chapter of the American Association of Woodturners, will meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the PacRim Tempering facility, 73-4260 Hulikoa Drive, mauka of Pine Trees Cafe. Attendees should bring lunch and a chair. Visitors are welcome.

Landscape maintenance training and certification programs offered
The Hawaii Island Landscape Association and University of Hawaii Cooperative Extension Service are offering the 2015 Landscape Maintenance Training and the Landscape Industry Certification programs to landscape professionals and home gardeners.
The course is a 10-week series of classes that may also be taken individually. Topics include: basic botany, tropical plant identification and selection, plant nutrition and soil health, turf care, irrigation basics, pruning trees and shrubs, establishing and managing a landscape, pesticide use and safety, pest ID and control, and landscape plan reading and calculations.
Classes begin April 8 and run Wednesday afternoons through June 10. The three-hour classes are held at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel from 2 to 5 p.m.
Cost for each class is $35 for HILA members and $40 for nonmembers. The fee for the entire series is $325 for members and $375 for nonmembers. Space is limited and early registration is suggested.
