Rotary clubs announce speakers

Group discusses aging, avoiding scams

The Senior Roundtable Hui will discuss aging and avoiding scams from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Pink Mocha Cafe, mauka of Home Depot.

People of all ages are invited to the interactive meeting. The group gathers on the first Tuesday of each month to discuss an aging topic. The first hour of the meeting will focus on the monthly topic, while any aging issues may be discussed in the last half-hour.

There is no charge, other than the option of purchasing coffee of tea. Parking offers easy access.

Senior tai chi classes planned

Elderly Recreation Services will hold a four-week tai chi workshop from 9 to 10 a.m. on four consecutive Tuesdays beginning this Tuesday in the gazebo at West Hawaii Civic Center. Cost is $5 for the four-week session.

Words and Wine scheduled Tuesday

Authors and illustrators Jamie Borromeo, Marion Coste, Rena Ekmanis and Steve and Sharon Hendricks will be featured during Kona Stories Book Shop’s Words and Wine event at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Keauhou Shopping Center.

Borromeo will present “Young, Educated &Broke: An Introduction to America’s New Poor.” The book is a blend of memoir and social commentary that highlights the author’s experience in America as a microcosm of the geopolitical and domestic affairs during the 2008 economic collapse.

Author Marion Coste and illustrator Rena Ekmanis will discuss “Hawaii’s Animals Do the Most Amazing Things.” Because the Hawaiian Islands are isolated many of its native animals have developed unusual adaptations, such as dolphins that spin through the air, shrimp that climb waterfalls and a tiny blood-sucking bug that survives on the summit of Mauna Kea.

“One Man’s Dream, One Woman’s Reality” by Steve and Sharon Hendricks describes the couple’s six-month journey aboard a 37-foot sailboat down the West Coast, through Mexico, Central and South America and the South Pacific.

Sharon Reed-Hendricks is the author of the poetry books, “Sharon Shares Her Heart” and “From Where Eagles Soar.”

Brain injury support group to meet

A presentation on medical identity theft and Medicare fraud will be given April 8 during a meeting of the Kona Brain Injury Support Group.

The presentation will be given by Judy Bell of Senior Medicare Patrol. Senior Medicare Patrol is a federally funded program under the U.S. Administration on Aging. It was established in 1997 and is sponsored by the state Executive Office on Aging.

The group will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hawaiian Rehab Services on Hualalai Road. Invited are all brain injury, stroke or other neuro-trauma survivors, their families and caregivers, interested professionals and the public.

Program helps businesses stand out

Stephanie Beeby of InFlow CEO Consulting and Alexandra Mitchell of What to Do Media will present “Stand Out, Step Up! Getting Noticed and Reaching More Customers” on Wednesday during the Alii Networkers meeting of Business Network International. The meeting is held from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Conference Room 6 of King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. Those attending will receive tips on how to stand out among their competition and step up their marketing efforts.
