Parker students raise funds through Jump Rope for Heart
Parker lower school students participated in the annual Jump Rope for Heart Event on Feb. 26. For several weeks prior, students collected funds from family, friends and sponsors to raise nearly $8,590, far surpassing their $5,000 goal.
On the day of the event, with Parker 11th-graders on hand to help facilitate, the young students gathered on the lower school’s field and moved through various jumping stations that featured activities such as solo jump roping, partner jumping, parachute fun, group jumping and team races.
The Jump Rope for Heart event raises money for the American Heart Association to help children with heart problems, and also teaches the young participants about how to keep their own hearts healthy through exercise and good nutrition.
Kohala Elementary School fifth-graders to compete in Newbery Quiz Bowl
Kohala Elementary School fifth-graders, known as the Reading Rebels, are preparing to compete in the Big Island Newbery Quiz Bowl to be held April 23 at Hapuna Prince Beach Hotel. This is Kohala Elementary School’s second time to participate in the reading incentive program, which promotes reading of American Library Association’s Newbery winners.
Students meet with their adviser, Melody Delostrico, throughout the week during the school day to review 40 selected Newbery Award winning works of literature, such as Louis Sachar’s “Holes,” Jack Gantos’ “Dead End in Norvelt” and Clare Vanderpool’s “Moon Over Manifest.”
Only five students may represent the school in the Newbery Quiz Bowl and there are eight team members.
Students seek Hawaii information
West Hawaii Today regularly receives inquiries and requests from elementary school children from other states seeking information about Hawaii, soliciting postcards, maps and other information for a school project. Typically their requests are about land forms, landmarks and famous people.

Bearth earns dean’s citation
Kailua-Kona resident David Bearth earned the dean’s citation for academic excellence in the Monfort College of Business at the University of Northern Colorado for the 2014 fall semester.
To qualify for the citation, business majors must attain a grade point average of at least 3.50 while taking at least 12 credits for the semester.
The Monfort College of Business is the first and only business college to receive the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award from a U.S. president.
Parker School auction raises $235K
Parker School held its 10th annual Kahiau dinner/auction gala for financial aid on March 7 at the Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii. More than 280 people attended and helped the school raise over $235,000, a record so far for this event.
