Kona Hongwanji Temple plans Buddha Day

Kona Hongwanji will honor the birth of Buddha and the founding of historical Buddhism at 9 a.m. Sunday during an event sponsored by the Buddhist Women Association. Rev. Bruce Nakamura is the featured speaker.

Affiliates and clubs will have displays in the social hall during fellowship and the preschool will hold an egg hunt for children.

Donations of flowers to decorate the pavilion on Saturday are sought.

Malaai School Garden fundraiser planned

Malaai School Garden’s annual Art &Sol celebration will include a silent and live auction from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday in the Kahilu Theatre Gallery.

The evening will begin with a feast of healthy, locally sourced foods prepared by Malaai Garden founder and program director Amanda Rieux and board president Matilda Tompson.

A few of the available auction items include a koa table, feasts by private chefs, a raised garden bed to be constructed at the buyer’s home, a set of hand-painted antique porcelain china, fruit and vegetable baskets and various gift certificates for activities, restaurants and spa treatments. All proceeds go toward supporting healthy choices and making life-long learners out of Waimea Middle School students and their extended community.

Kilauea Iki Crater hike planned Sunday

The nonprofit Friends of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will hold a “Sunday Walk in the Park” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Led by volcanologist Cheryl Gansecki, this month’s 4-mile hike will explore Kilauea Iki Crater. Participants should bring a bag lunch.

The event is free for members. Nonmembers are welcome to join in order to attend. Annual memberships are $30 for individuals and $45 for families.

Lions Club fundraiser is Sunday

Lions Club of Kona Community Foundation will holds its Lion Fundraise Auction from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Hale Halawai on Alii Drive.

The event includes a light lunch, entertainment and a silent and live auction, with proceeds benefiting humanitarian programs in Kona.

Lindy Hop classes planned in Waimea

Waimea Ballroom Dance Club will hold Lindy Hop lessons starting Monday at the Kahilu Town Hall.

Classes will be from 7 to 8 p.m. for six consecutive Mondays. Registration is at 6:30 p.m. on the first two weeks of classes. A half-hour practice mixer is held at 8 p.m.

No partner is necessary. Lance Oliver is the instructor. Cost is $20 for all six lessons, plus $25 annual dues for new members. Call Peter In at 885-4776 for details.

Kona Vegetarian Society meets

Jack Ebner, who has a doctorate in biophysiology and is in private practice in Kona, will give a talk titled, “Cracking the medical code: Separating fact from fiction” at Kona Vegetarian Society’s monthly meeting Monday.

A potluck dinner will be held at 5:30 p.m and the meeting begins at 6:30 on the second floor of Professional Plaza on the corner of Kuakini Highway and Hualalai Road.

AARP driver safety class scheduled

Kona Palisades Association is sponsoring an AARP Smart Driver class at 1 p.m. April 27 at the Palisades Recreation Center on lower Kaiminani Drive. The class does not include driving or written tests only quizzes. It covers subjects that may affect drivers as they age, such as hearing, eyesight, reflexes, safety rules, road rage, rules of the road, problems at intersections, drinking and driving, as well as other subjects.

Some participants may receive a discount on their auto insurance after completing the class.
